Chicago Sights

Welcome

Welcome to Chicago. There is so much to see and do in this city that I can't even begin to list everything here. I will bring your attention to some places that Jace and I have enjoyed together in the city as well as places I'd recommend for families. If you are looking for a places to stay during your visit, click here.

Navy Pier

One of the best known tourist attractions in Chicago is Navy Pier. But Navy Pier is not just for tourists. Jace and I have spend many dates here. We've seen movies at the IMAX, eaten at the restaurants, danced at our church's Not-so-New Year's Ball in the crystal gardens and disembarked on the cruise ship Mystic Blue for our company's summer event. Where we work click here.

Grant Park and Millennium Park

Located between the city's elegant skyscrapers and soothing lakeshore, Grant Park and the new Millennium Park are a fun place to roam around in downtown Chicago. Jace and I have even walked over here on our lunch breaks. The sights to see in Grant Park include the massive Buckingham Fountain and the Art Institue of Chicago. Jace and I used to go to the Art Institute on dates after work on Tuesday's when the museum had free admission. Millennium Park added an ice skating rink, the bean (pictured) and the Pritzker Pavilion designed by architect Frank Gehry. More on Millennium Park.

Museums

Chicago has some fantastic museums. I've already mentioned the Art Institute of Chicago. Add to that the Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, I could go on and on. Jace and I spent a fabulous date picnicing on the lawn outside the Shedd. The view of the skyline was unbeatable. Here are some links to museum web pages for more info:

Shedd Aquarium
Adler Planetarium
Museum of Contemporary Art

Lincoln Park

The first day of genuinely warm weather is always a miracle in Chicago. All at once, it seems, thousands of people drop everything, shed their winter layers, and head to the city's largest park. Jace and I have spent tons of time in and around Lincoln Park. We traverse the park to get to North Avenue Beach where we play in a summer volleyball league. We bike along the lakefront path that stretches from Evanston in the north to the University of Chicago in the south. Lincoln Park is also home to a free zoo. We've often gone on photo safaris to capture lions. And I can't tell you how many times Garrett has played stick in this park.

Architecture

Jace and I both really enjoy architecture. Chicago is a fun place to roam around looking syward or even stopping to admire (and in Jace's case photograph) an interesting doorway, firescape or other architectural element. Here are some buildings that define Chicago.

Chicago Board of Trade Building - next door to Liz's office building, this building is centered at the end of picturesque LaSalle Street.

John Hancock Center - the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor offers great views of the lake and the skyline for the price of a few cocktails.

Marshall Field's - Frango Mints, the Walnut Room, a Tiffany glass mosaic dome ceiling, the epitome of State Street shopping.

Tribune Tower - imbedded in the building's exterior at street level are chunks of famous structures from around the world including the Taj Mahal, the Berlin Wall, the Alamo and West Minster Abbey.

Water Tower - the only public building that survived the Great Fire.

Wrigley Building - headquarters of the chewing gum company, this building marks the south end of the Magnificient Mile.

Sears Tower - read more about the site of our reception.
